Osteoporosis and Bone Density Testing

Breaking a bone can be a painful and arduous recovery at any age, but it’s especially serious when you’re older. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, about 10 million Americans already have the disease. Still another 34 million people are at risk of developing osteoporosis, and it is estimated that approximately half of all women 50 years old and older will break a bone because of osteoporosis.

Certain people are more likely to develop osteoporosis than others. Factors that increase the likelihood of developing osteoporosis and broken bones are called “risk factors.” Many of these risk factors include:

  • Female
  • 50+ years of age
  • Family history of osteoporosis and/or broken bones
  • Small frame and/or thin build
  • History of broken bones
  • Low hormone levels
  • Poor diet
  • Inactive lifestyle
  • Smoking
  • Drinking too much alcohol
  • Taking certain medications
  • Positive for certain diseases and conditions such as anorexia nervosa, rheumatoid arthritis, and gastrointestinal diseases.

Visit our Health Library for more information on osteoporosis risk factors.

A bone density test can easily monitor your bone strength and loss as you age. For more information on our bone density testing, please call (305) 792-5828.
